Description
No ... this is not a snow covered tree. This is a false color infrared photograph of a rugged live oak tree along the banks of the Pedernales River near Johnson City, Texas. The Pedernales is a a tributary of the Colorado River approximately 106 miles long in central Texas. The name "Pedernales", first used in the middle 18th century, comes from a spanish word for the flint rocks characteristic of the riverbed. The river has a close association with the Texas Hill Country, tied to the history of the region and emblematic of its geography. Along its route it flows over numerous rugged limestone escarpments as it winds eastward, passing along the south side of the ranch of President Lyndon B. Johnson, who grew up in nearby Stonewall, south of the river. The trees along this river are rugged with bold character to match the people of the region.
The function of Infrared Photography (like Black and White Photography) is not to render the world as we see it, but rather to use light, dark and false color to enhance texture and composition. The invisible infrared light has a profound influence on the texture of the sky and clouds that is not seen in visible light photography.
