Artist's Description

The Large Spindle Piece was created in 1969 and was given to the City of Houston by the Knox Foundation in 1979. Originally intended for Tranquillity Park, Henry Moore, the sculptor, came to Houston to oversee its installation and deemed the space inappropriate due to the tight space and extremely angular verticality of the park’s architecture. The huge grassy expanse of Buffalo Bayou Park, with its distant view of downtown, was considered to be a much preferable spot.

The abstract piece, cast in bronze, is mounted on a circular concrete base painted matte brown. The curves, points, and edges were inspired by Michelangelo’s famous depiction of God’s and Adam’s fingers almost touching across an empty space.

The surrealistic photograph is a false (faux) color infrared image taken in Tinsley Park along Buffalo Bayou in Houston, Texas. The camera is an 655 nm infrared converted Nikon Z6.
