Description
Photograph of one of many Rice University Gargoyles cut into the cloister of Lovett Hall in Houston Texas. There are four gargoyles in the Rice Sallyport that represent students of each of the four undergraduate classes (Guardians of the Gate). This Gargoyle is known as the Scholarly Senior (or Sally Port Senior). Note the mortarboard and tassel. The Gargoyle was installed circa 1912 with the construction of Lovett Hall. The architecture campus is Byzantine style with the intension of the University's namesake, William Marsh Rice, to rival the Ivy League universities on the East coast of the United States. This is one of the many unknown Houston Gargoyles.
Situated on nearly 300 acres in the heart of Houston's Museum District and across the street from the city's Hermann Park, Rice is a green and leafy refuge – an oasis of learning convenient to the amenities of the nation's fourth-largest city.
